We are all busy. I don’t think that is up for debate, EVER!

As a working mom, my to do list grows by the second, and you all know that self-care is non-negotiable for me. So, how do I fit it all in? Well, I’m gonna tell ya right now….

I was introduced to an idea called “batching” and it was a game changer. An amazing business coach suggested batching work, like writing for example. If you write one blog post a week, she suggests setting aside a few hours, a day, or a weekend to get a bunch done at one time.

This works because once you get in your creative zone of genius it is easier to stay there than jumping in and out constantly. I really respect and think that this coach is awesome so I gave it a try, and you know what, I loved it. So much so that I began to wonder where else in my life I could use the batching concept. I started experimenting in the kitchen.

I love to eat healthy food that nurtures my body and spirit, but if it isn’t available I may fall subject to eating cheese and 70% dark chocolate for meals because I could literally live on both of them.

The past few weeks I have spent an hour on Sunday afternoons preparing a few healthy things to have on had all week long, such as two kind of oatmeal (I am a big fan of mixing rolled oats and steel cut together after they are cooked – if you have never done it you must try!) lentils, quinoa, and hard-boiled eggs, so that I can grab something for a quick lunch, or use them to add to a dinner easily. I realize that I don’t want to be over the stove every single day, so if I batch my stove time I am much happier in my kitchen throwing together salads, quinoa fried rice, or a yummy lentil dish.

I now batch my exercise planning too. I decide on Sunday what my schedule will be for the week based on when I have clients or classes. Doing so allows me to schedule a variety of workouts such as yoga, running, and boot camp, and my mind is clearer not having to organize my schedule on a daily basis.

I love reading self-help and spiritual books but I try to limit my time on Amazon because I get completely sucked in! So I batch my book buying now. I will order a few titles to have on hand, and when the stack is read I will buy a few more.

I also find that I am most productive when I have days that are mostly work, or mostly play. Once I get in my zone of genius I don’t want to leave the computer, and once I am enjoying a mani/pedi I am more inclined to hit a store, meet a friend for a juice, or do something else relaxing for myself. I have started batching work days and self-care days so that I can make the most of both.

    I love doing things this way, but I didn’t realize there was a name for it! I like to schedule all of my errands/appointments on one day when I can get up, get dressed, and get going, and then have other days when I just sit around in my pjs and write, work at the computer, etc. I also do it with food…sometimes Sunday is my dedicated “food day” when I’ll inventory our freezer, make a plan for the week, figure out what needs to be used up, eaten, and what I need to stock up on. The one area I DON’T want to batch is cleaning. I hate spending a whole day cleaning my house, so I’m trying to figure out a way to spread it out throughout the week.

      I hear you on the cleaning!! I love what you do about looking through the freezer. I need to do that 🙂
